Just over a month ago, The Bearded One and I suddenly bought a house. Just over a week ago we closed on the house and started moving in. Also in the last week, I started having to report to work/school again for our pre-service days before the school year starts, and the furniture finally arrived for the library in one of my buildings that’s getting a facelift, so Wednesday last week we finally got to start putting all 20,000-ish books away on the new shelves. The Bearded One and I also made a quick trip to Des Moines the other night to see a comedian he’d bought tickets to months ago. These are a few of the reasons I didn’t get anything posted here last week.
The Bearded One and I are starting to settle in to our new house and we’ve gotten to meet a few of our new neighbors, all of whom have been super friendly–one couple even brought us cold beer, a bag of tortilla chips, and a jar of their homemade salsa today to welcome us to the neighborhood. And the fenced yard is a game-changer for Ms. Marty who now gets her own space to roam without being tethered (see if you can spot her frolicking in the new back yard in the photo at the top of the page). She even has doggie neighbors now–three giant rough collies named Apollo, Freya, and Pearl are right next door, and we can occasionally see at least three other dogs in yards that aren’t right next to ours.
I feel so very lucky to get to live in a place like this, and it’s undoubtedly a good move for us as a family. But it’s been an incredibly busy week of a busy summer, and I don’t see it slowing down much anytime soon since we’re not fully moved into the new house yet, there are still thousands of books that need to be put away in that one library, more books I need to process for all of my buildings, and I’m not totally sure what exactly I’m going to be teaching when my students start back to school this coming Tuesday. Oh, and tomorrow is the official start of the semester (and the first session of one of the classes I’m taking) for the university through which I’m getting my master’s. Maybe someday things will slow down a little, but for now they (and we) are moving!
