Spring

It’s finally starting to feel like spring here in northeast Iowa. We’ve had a few days here and there with high temps in the 60s, and we had a good spring rain this week. Of course, the rain was mixed with snow/sleet at times and the high temps will be back in the 40s and 50s this week). But today, on the vernal equinox, the first official day of spring here in the northern hemisphere, I spent most of the day outside and it was SO needed.

I started the day with a run (which is normal–it was run streak day 1,412!), but instead of knocking out our usual 1.25-1.5 mile run and short .25 mile walk to cool down, we ran about 1.3 miles and then walked another mile. I think Ms. Marty appreciated the extra time to sniff, and a giant flock of geese flew right above us, heading north (see above) while other migratory birds made their presence known, singing up a storm. A little later, after we both had breakfast, I went back outside (sans dog) to do a little work in the barn (which is also normal for me on a Sunday, but it’s always much more pleasant when I don’t have to wear a coat and winter gloves).

The red-winged blackbirds are back–see if you can find the TWO in this picture!

After that, I took Marty out again and hooked her up to her little tie-out. She sunbathed while I logged into my graduate class website since spring break is officially over and I have to start worrying about homework again. I did a little organization of assignments, but the gorgeous weather and smells of spring distracted me and I started watching videos on how to start new no-till garden beds. One of my plans this year is to sell plant starts and grow produce to sell (I’ve dabbled, but it’ll be more organized this year!). So I watched those videos, and wandered around the yard, planning where I might put new beds. And then I started pulling some of the weeds that took over my garden last summer when I was still working at the library. Don’t worry–I left most of the cover on for the insects that might still be laying low! I just wanted to pull the big ones while the ground was nice and soft.

Soon that grass will be GREEN!

I took my seedlings outside to get a dose of real sunlight (the lights in the basement are okay, but they’re no sun!), and took Marty for another little walk, where we ran into my mom who was also out walking. Marty and I sat outside some more after that until it was time to come in and make dinner. And we went out to wander some more AFTER dinner. This day was EXACTLY what I needed before classes start back up and I’m racing to get everything done by the end of the semester.

Baby plants under lights!

I am a person who needs to be outside. I think we should all spend more time outside, because I absolutely feel better, mentally and physically, after I’ve spent time out in the fresh air–even in winter, but especially when things are green and growing. We’re moving into the best time of the year–when the breeze is warm and the shade is cool and I’d be happy to stay outside all day, every day. I know we’re all busy, but don’t let these beautiful days pass by without enjoying them if you can help it!
